BUYING GUIDE: Flashgear.Net Quick Paraboxes

Flashgear.Net 20” Quick Parabox

The Flashgear.net Quick Parabox is a go-to modifier for creating dramatic, directional light.

Because they have a long shape, light bounces around inside of the box and softens before being directed straight ahead, without spreading out very much.

I use a Parabox when I want a dramatic look, and a lot of control.

Characteristics of the Quick Parabox

LEFT: Flashgear 20” Quick Parabox
RIGHT: Flashgear 48” Quick Parabox

Both images were created using an FJ400 at the same distance, with no fill light. You can see the smaller size box creates less spill on the background. The larger size box spreads further over the subject.

The Quick Parabox creates an even light, with no center hotspot. This is due to the double diffusion, and optional deflector plate. A grid is also included with each Quick Parabox, and can be used to direct the light even further.

Choosing a size for your Quick Parabox

There are no hard and fast rules about which size box will fit your needs best. You can use your modifiers in different ways to maximize the versatility no matter which size you choose. However, you may find there is an ideal size for your lights and needs. These are some considerations with real life examples that may help you make the right choice.

Here I am using the 20” for a really dramatic look in a hotel lobby. The small size pairs perfectly with a Speedlight for these shots where you just need a little light to add to a scene. I love it for dramatic fashion and wedding looks in particular.

  • Perfect for FJ80s and FJ200s

  • Sized for headshots or spotlighting faces in a full length portrait.

  • Ideal for small/living room studios and is easier to work around. It is also the most wind resistant size.

The Flashgear.net 28” Quick Parabox went with me on location here because it gives me a larger size that still falls on the dress, but is easy enough to manage when walking around. I love it when I’m looking for a versatile modifier for a variety of dramatic looks,

  • 28” is a maximum size for the FJ200.

  • This is a versatile all around size.

  • 28" mid size for balancing, ideal for home studios if you need a compromise between the two and will work in most spaces.

The Flashgear.net 48” Quick Parabox is perfect in a larger studio space, where I want full length dramatic light for a timeless portrait. It’s large size creates a beautiful, soft light with direction and control.

  • Requires FJ400s or more powerful lights to provide enough usable light.

  • Ideal for full length or even softer headshots.

  • Provides more control with the included grid, and is fantastic when you have a larger space or higher ceilings.
