Rays of Light with the Optical Spot

Using the optical spot to create rays is one of the most amazing (and challenging!) ways to use it...but, I love a challenge!! (Oh, and really don't like photoshop, which is also an option, haha).

This beautiful backdrop already has a ray of light printed on it. But, I wanted to create a REAL light beam just for fun.

  • You need hard, focused light to create the best beam. Soft light (like from an umbrella or softbox) won't create the edges you need to craft this look.

  • Shadows are crucial to making a beam of light look dramatic. If you have too much fill light, there's no beam. Just light everywhere!

  • Learned the hard way that it helps if your subject wears DARK clothing. The contrast of clothes to light will make the beam pop even more!

  • Smoke helps beams of light show up! I love using atmosphere aerosol (smoke in a can), because I can use exactly how much I want, but a smoke/fog machine is also ideal in certain circumstances.

  • Aim your beam of light slightly in front of your subject. If you point it directly at them, it has nowhere to go.

These are SOOC results. Check out the comments for a final edit, and more examples of fun with light beams.
